Incorporating Selectional Restrictions into HPSG

چکیده

This article is concerned with integrating the phenomenon of selectional restrictions in a formal grammar theory. Firstly, the question of treating selectional restrictions purely in the semantic module is discussed, as there are some contextual (or pragmatic) influences, which can repair the ill-formedness of violated selectional restrictions. Secondly, we shed light on the stucture of pragmatics in general and then see how pragmatics is dealt with in Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar, a formal framework we take as a concrete example for implementation. Then we present existing approaches to selectional restrictions within this framework and, lastly, make our own proposal which describes the subject as part of the semantics-pragmatics interface. In particular, we show how a semantic ontology can be integrated.

Selectional Restrictions in HPSG

Selectional restrictions are semantic sortal constraints imposed on the participants of linguistic constructions to capture contextuallydependent constraints on interpretation. Despite their limitations, selectional restrictions have proven very useful in natural language applications, where they have been used frequently in word sense disambiguation, syntactic disambiguation, and anaphora reso...

At First Blush on Tenterhooks: About Selectional Restrictions Imposed by Nonheads

Selection is one of the major mechanisms in formal grammar, such as HPSG (Pollard and Sag, 1994), and is used for two purposes which are usually applied in the same contexts: First, syntactic and semantic arguments are specified and their relation to the selector is indicated. This is usually expressed in terms of thematic role assignment. Second, the properties of elements that may be combined...

Processing Complex Noun Phrases In A Natural Language Interface To A Statiscal Database

Analysis of a corpus of queries to a statistical database has shown considerable variation in the location and order of modifiers in complex noun phrases.
